We've dropped the music rehearsals now, so we're only doing floor work. I fear it may have been a bit premature - there's not masses for the chorus to sing, but I'd still rather it was sung well rather than tentatively/wrong. That's just my two penn'orth though, I'm sure everyone at rehearsals will have a differing view to me. And to everyone else for that matter! Anyhow, the line has been drawn down the middle of the stage (or, down the middle of the Spartan's function room, where we rehearse!), and we all know whether or not we're farmers or cowboys now. Let's just say I've found a really great fringed waistcoat and I'm working on my bandy legged walk! I'm also looking forward to the bandy legged conga, though that may have to wait until the last performance. There seem to be a lot of little bits of dancing in Oklahoma, but they all seem to have been cut out, which is a shame, though I guess it's inevitable due to the fact that our average audience will probably not be able to sit still for four hours, even with an ice cream break in the middle! I understand that the dream sequence is going ahead - I even know who's going to be dream Laurey (or perhaps I should say nightmare Laurey!), but she ain't much like Lindsay, so the audience is going to have to use their imaginations! I'm not sure who dream Curly is going to be, will try to find out. Hopefully, the details about what sort of costume we should be looking out for will be provided soon. From the looks of the last show, it's gingham and checks all the way! Oklahoma! 1980

Big thank you to John Robson this week for bringing us an enormous box of sweets. I won't say what sort, but I will say that kids and grown-ups love them so, and although there were a tonne left, the box is in the back of my car. I'm not thinking about them at all. Much. We had our AGM last night, and it was a very civilised affair, no arguments at all. Although the committee had hoped to present South Pacific to the society as our recommendation for our next show, unfortunately it isn't available, so we've gone with the show we'd hoped to perform in 2013, which is Annie Get Your Gun. Looks interesting! It'll be twenty years since we last performed that one, so that's quite a respectable gap. Christine Young and Michael Douglas in the 1992 production of Annie Get Your Gun. Ailsa Standring was voted onto the management committee in place of Tracy Clough, so welcome Ailsa, and thanks to Tracy for her hard work. Production updates: Peter Moore has unfortunately had to drop out of Oklahoma, so the small but pivotal role of Slim/Farmer has gone to Derek Gaskell - thanks Derek! The four named girls who are permitted to sing a line or two in Out of My Mind Dreams are Joanne Laws, Ailsa Standring, Susan Laws and Susan Smith. I've managed a few little tweaks on the website, though I'm still working on the page for Kiss Me Kate. I decided it was about time to embrace twitter, and so we've now got a twitter feed, and the swanky little widget at the bottom right of our home page will display wise words as dispensed by @beaconsfieldopsoc. You can follow us if you like - while we've got a few friends, we're still a little bit lonely (sniff).

We started rehearsals in May, had the auditions in June, and now we're all cast, so it's heads down into our scores to learn the tunes before moving on to doing floor work, which will probably be before the end of ths month (erk!) There's not a great deal for the chorus to do in Oklahoma, so I suppose there's not too much to learn. It's easy for me also, since I'm a first sop (for this show at least!), so I can pretty much just sing the tune. We're on one rehearsal a week at the moment, and that's not likely to change until late August or September, unless you're one of the lucky suckers who landed a principal part. Since I'm not one of them, hopefully I should be able to find some time to update the website. I've got so many photos to upload, and no excuse for not doing it, either! Speaking of photos, big thank you to Gordon Allen, who has recently supplied me with a number of photos of the society from the 20s and 30s. His mother, Annie Allen, was one of the lead actresses in the society at the time, and continued her association for more than 50 years. Annie Dawson (Allen) as Tessa in The Gondoliers (1931)
In other news, happy birthday to Sheena B (not a significant one, and don't think I don't know when it's coming, Sheena!), and congrats to Joanne L on her new home. It's Beaconsfield's AGM next Wednesday at the Spartan, so it's a 7pm start. Be there or miss your opportunity to argue about the next shows we're going to do.
